Two forms of Eye Fixation with Safe Place
- Client’s eyes Raised up 60 degrees focused on a spot.
- Client focuses on therapist’s fingers as the fingers move back and forth.
When client closes their eyes have them visualize their own Safe Place. Have the client rest in their Safe place. Enhance the sense of safety with breathing – Deep and Rhythmic – Feeling the Safety – Taking it into the body…..feeling as safe as they can…Have the client rest in the safety for a few moments. Then count the client back from 1 to 5. Discuss the experience with the client. Focus on the client’s ability to create his or her own Safe Place/place of personal power/feelings of comfort.
“Keep your eyes fixed on that spot on the ceiling and as you do so, I want you to concentrate on relaxing your shoulders . . . feel them relax . . . allow them to relax . . . feel each and every muscle relaxing and letting go . . . experience the feeling of relaxation settling into each and every muscle . . . and while these muscles continue to progressively relax let that feeling of relaxation flow down your arms causing each and every muscle of both your arms to relax and let go . . . make them relax . . . let them grow limp and relaxed . . . as you continue to look at the spot on the ceiling, feel your eyes growing tired . . . progressively more tired as you continue to gaze at that spot on the ceiling . . . as your body continues to relax it causes your eyelids to start relaxing just as though they want to close and ease your tired eyes . . . let your eyelids relax and let go. Feel them want to close and ease your tired eyes . . . let your eyelids relax and let go. Feel them want to close and ease your tired eyes . . . let your eyelids relax and let go. Feel them want to close and ease your tired eyes. Feel the relaxation settling down into your legs . . . Let those leg muscles relax . . . Make them relax . . . And as you continue to sit in that chair (or lie in bed) each passing moment causes your arms and legs to progressively relax more and more . . . so just let them relax . . . Now imagine a place that you feel safe… this can be a place that you actually know, in your home, or in your room, or it can be a place that you make up. This is your Safe Place… Feel Safe. (After a period of silence return to ordinary consciousness)
Coming back now. I will count to five. When I say five you will be in present tense, feeling wide awake and fine. You will remember everything you need to know.
1 . . . take in a long deep breath
2 . . . coming back into your body
3 . . . starting to move and stretch
4 . . . getting ready to open your eyes
5 . . . eyes open, wide wake and fully present
